The Day My Daughter Stole Something From Me

My 6-year-old asked me a simple question about stealing. My answer surprised both of us.

My 6-year-old daughter looked at me with big, curious eyes.

“Bad people steal things, right?”

Most times, that’s true.

But not that day.

I thought for a bit, then said:

“Not always lah. Some good people also steal things…”

She looked confused.

I smiled:

“You stole my heart.”

Her face became all confused.

“I didn’t steal anything from you leh..”

But I just smiled.

“You stole my heart the day you were born ma..”

Now she was sure:

“No lah, I am crying when I was born — I didn’t steal anything.”

So I told her:

“You’ll understand when you’re older. I love you so much.”

Actually, not everyone who “steals” is bad.

The best things in life — the things that make us happy, change us, make us feel good — usually surprise us.

Sometimes, what gets “stolen” is actually a gift.

Life is funny like that, kan?
